Avenging Disco Godfather (Rudy Ray Moore) Passes Away at Age 81

Sad news from Mike Welsh this morning, Rudy Ray Moore (the actor who played “Dolemite” and the “Avenging Disco Godfather” and predicted rap music in the 1970s) passed away in Akron, Ohio at age 81. During high school and college I was addicted to Moore’s movies and I made my friends watch them again and again. “Avenging Disco Godfather” was my favorite. It was the story of an ex-cop and vigilante, disco DJ (Tucker) who gets upset that “the Angle Dust is ruining the minds of our young people” and proceeds to kick some ass with plenty of weird, disco music and freaky hallucination scenes full of PCP, vampire, monster things in the guise of Tucker’s mother.

Rudy, we’ll miss you. “From the north to the south… put your weight on it!”

From the New York Times article:

Rudy Ray Moore, whose standup comedy, records and movies related earthy rhyming tales of a vivid gaggle of characters as they lurched from sexual escapade to sexual escapade in a boisterous tradition, born in Africa, that helped shape today’s hip-hop, died Sunday in Akron, Ohio. He was 81.

There really isn’t much I can say that will enhance this video that I saw in a BoingBoing post today.

Enjoy.

Video: Johnny Cash & Cypress Hill Mashup

I was starting to bum out because Gary Gygax passed away but then I saw a post with this video from Matt Jordan at You Ain’t No Picasso and my spirits were considerably elevated. The two songs are Johnny Cash’s “Get Rhythm” and Cypress Hill’s “Insane in the Membrane.”

Pandora - Radio from the Music Genome Project

I’ve recently started listened listening to Pandora. It’s a service that generates internet radio stations that play music similar to any song or artist you request. Pandora uses complex algorithms to match music using very precise attributes that people have entered in as part of the Music Gemome Project. It’s great for discovering new music.

You visit my Pandora profile page and see constantly updated lists of what I’m listening with these widgets:

WKRP Redux

A lot of people have sent us nice emails wishing us luck in our move back to Cincinnati but Scott Parker took the cake when he reworked the WKRP theme to fit my particular situation. Awesomeness.

Hey there, if you’ve ever wondered,

Wondered whatever became of me,
I’m living on the web in Cincinnati,
Cincinnati, Web 2.0 for me.

Got kind of tired packing and unpacking,
Town to town, then SF for a while,
Maybe it was all the tie dye out in Berkeley,
Now please don’t forget to FTP that file…

I’m at Web Two Zero P in Cincinnati..

For those of you who are under 30 (or from outside North America) here’s a large group rendition of the song led by Booty Collins to help you learn the tune.

Video: “I Wanna Love You Tender” by Armi & Danny

I’ve shared some fine Dschingis Khan videos in the past, but this music video by the 1980’s Finnish band Armi & Danny is up there with the best of them. Disco cheerleaders on a low budget spacecraft… excellent stuff!

Video: The Rocking Son of Dschingis Khan

Watch the Video of Rocking Son of Dschingis Khan. Another video surfaced on the internet by the German disco group Dschingis Khan. It doesn’t have the best video quality but I think that it might be more awesome than Moskau or the self titled one or Loreley. Thanks Scott and Lee.

Mark’s Monday Music #5 - Barcelona Street Music Video

I’m back from vacation and I am breaking from the format a bit with this week’s show. This is a five minute montage of street musicians and other video clips from my trip to Barcelona. Enjoy!

Internet Radio: Techno & Eclectic Christmas Music

Christine and I were wrapping presents and getting into the holiday spirit tonight. We came across Christmas Remixed by a San Francisco D.J. who calls himself D.J. Snoman. It’s an Internet radio station chocked full of electronic holiday music, everything from a soulful drum and bass version of “The Christmas Song” to a banging techno remix of Elvis’ “Blue Christmas”. The station is the perfect soundtrack for your hip, cosmopolitan, yule-tide soiree. If you want something more eclectic, check out Soma FM’s Xmas in Frisko, but note that not all of the songs are appropriate for family gatherings.
